Virgin Voyages San Juan Port Guide: Cruise Terminal, Hotels, and Things to Do

San Juan is one of the best places to start a cruise. It's easy to reach from the mainland, you don't need a passport to fly there from the US, and Old San Juan is right next to the cruise piers. Virgin Voyages sails Southern Caribbean itineraries from San Juan in the winter season, which gets you to islands that are hard to reach from Florida. Here's everything you need to know about sailing Virgin from San Juan.

Old San Juan is just steps from the cruise piers, so you can explore before you sail.

Where Virgin Voyages Sails From San Juan

San Juan sailings head south into the Eastern and Southern Caribbean. Depending on your sailing, you could visit:

  • Tortola, British Virgin Islands

  • Bridgetown, Barbados

  • Castries, St. Lucia

  • St. John's, Antigua

  • Philipsburg, St. Maarten

  • Basseterre, St. Kitts

  • Fort-de-France, Martinique

  • Oranjestad, Aruba, and Willemstad, Curaçao, on the Aruban Nights itineraries

That's the big draw. You get more ports and fewer sea days than most sailings from Florida, and some of the Caribbean's best beaches and hikes. For excursion picks, see my Virgin Voyages Shore Things Guide.

Where Is the Cruise Terminal?

Virgin lists Pier 4 on Paseo Concepción de Gracia in Old San Juan as its San Juan terminal. Some sailors have boarded from the nearby Pan American Pier, so always check your boarding pass in the Virgin Voyages app before you head over. Either way, you're only a few minutes from Old San Juan.

Getting to the Port

Flying Into San Juan

Fly into Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), which has direct flights from many US cities. The ride to Old San Juan usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Taxis and rideshares are both easy to find.

I always recommend flying in the day before. Flights to the Caribbean get delayed, and the ship won't wait. Arriving early also gives you a free day to explore.

Do You Need a Passport?

Puerto Rico is a US territory, so US citizens don't need a passport to fly there. Your cruise will visit foreign islands, though, so I always recommend sailing with a passport. See Do You Need a Passport for a Cruise? for the full rules.

Embarkation Day

  • Pick your arrival time in the Virgin Voyages app ahead of time, and arrive during your window.

  • Drop your bags with the porters at the terminal. They'll be delivered to your cabin later in the day.

  • Keep a carry-on with your documents, medications, a swimsuit, and anything you'll want before your bags arrive.

Once you're onboard, head to lunch and find a spot on deck for sailaway. Leaving San Juan past the walls of El Morro is one of the best sailaways in the Caribbean.

Where to Stay Before Your Cruise

  • Old San Juan: Stay inside the historic district if you want to walk everywhere, from the forts to the restaurants. You're minutes from the piers.

  • Condado: A beachfront neighborhood with big hotels, restaurants, and a short ride to the port.

  • Isla Verde: Close to the airport and on the beach. Good if you're arriving late.

Things to Do in San Juan Before You Sail

Explore Old San Juan

Walk the blue cobblestone streets, see the colorful buildings, and visit Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal. Both forts are part of a national historic site, and the views over the ocean are worth the walk.

Take the Ferry to Culebra

If you have a full day, this is my top pick. Head to the ferry in Ceiba and spend the day at Flamenco Beach on Culebra, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Plan ahead, since the ferry is a drive from San Juan and fills up.

El Yunque National Forest

The only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System is about an hour from San Juan. Go for waterfalls, hiking trails, and lush views. Check whether you need a reservation for the main recreation area before you go.

Rum and Food

Puerto Rico is famous for rum, and you can tour a distillery near the city. Make time for local food like mofongo, and if you're near the beach, try the food kiosks in Piñones.

A Bioluminescent Bay

Puerto Rico has some of the brightest bioluminescent bays in the world. A night kayak tour is unforgettable, but plan it for a night before your cruise, not sail day.

When Is the Best Time to Sail From San Juan?

Virgin's San Juan season runs during the Caribbean's dry season, which is the best time to visit. December through April has the most reliable weather. Holiday sailings book up early, so plan ahead if you want Christmas or New Year's.

San Juan vs. Miami: Which Should You Pick?

  • Pick San Juan if you want more ports, islands farther south, and a pre-cruise day in Puerto Rico.

  • Pick Miami if you want shorter sailings, often cheaper flights, or a stop at The Beach Club at Bimini. See my Virgin Voyages Miami Port Guide.
