Virgin Voyages Shore Things Guide: How to Book the Best Excursions

On Virgin Voyages, excursions are called Shore Things. They range from beach days and snorkeling trips to food tours and full-day adventures. Here's how they work, when to book, and how to get the most out of your days in port.

What Are Shore Things?

Shore Things are the excursions Virgin Voyages offers in each port. They're booked and run through Virgin, and they're designed around the ship's schedule, so you're not left juggling timing on your own.

You'll find options for every style of traveler, from easygoing beach days to active adventures and cultural tours.

When Can You Book Shore Things?

  • All sailors: booking opens 120 days before your sailing.
  • RockStar suites: booking opens 135 days before your sailing. The early access only applies to sailors staying in a RockStar cabin.

Popular Shore Things sell out, especially on shorter sailings and in busy ports, so book as soon as your window opens.

How to Book

You can book Shore Things through:

  • The Virgin Voyages app
  • Your account on virginvoyages.com
  • Onboard at Sailor Services
  • Your First Mate

Payment

Payment is due when you book. Shore Things aren't held without payment, so have your card ready.

If your First Mate books Shore Things for you, Virgin sends you a confirmation email. Pay that same day so your spot is locked in.

You can also use Sailor Loot toward Shore Things. Your Bar Tab only covers drinks, so it won't apply here.

Cancellations and Changes

  • Cancel at least 48 hours before your Shore Thing's start time.
  • Rescheduling is allowed before that 48-hour mark, unless the excursion's details say otherwise.
  • Before your sailing, cancel in the app, on the website, or through Sailor Services. Onboard, head to the Shore Things desk.

Check the "Need to Know" section of each Shore Thing in the app for any special rules.

Why Book Through Virgin Instead of an Independent Tour?

You'll see cheaper tours online, but booking through Virgin has real advantages:

  • Timing is built around the ship. Virgin plans Shore Things around your port hours, so you're not watching the clock all day.
  • Independent tours are on you. If a third-party tour runs late, the ship won't wait.
  • Everything's in one place. Your Shore Things show up in the app with your other plans, and changes and cancellations go through Virgin.
  • Your First Mate can help. If anything changes before you sail, I can sort it out for you.

How to Pick the Right Shore Things

  • Match the port. In a port like Bimini, the Beach Club might be all you need. In a big port, a guided tour helps you see more in less time.
  • Read the activity level. Some Shore Things involve long walks, swimming, or uneven ground.
  • Leave room to relax. Booking something every port day can wear you out. Mix in a slow day.
  • Book the must-dos first. Lock in the one or two excursions you'd be sad to miss, then fill in the rest.
