Grand Turk Cruise Port Guide: Jack's Shack, Beaches, and Things to Do

Grand Turk is one of the easiest and most beautiful cruise ports in the Caribbean. Your ship docks right at the pier, the beach is steps away, and the water is the kind of clear turquoise you see in screensavers. Virgin Voyages stops here on select Caribbean sailings from Miami, and it's also a regular stop for Carnival and other lines. Here's how to make the most of your day.

Getting Off the Ship

Ships dock directly at the Grand Turk Cruise Center, so there's no tender boat. It's a short, flat walk from the ship to the cruise center, and electric trams run along the pier if you'd rather ride.

The cruise center has shops, a pool, a swim-up bar, and a beach right there, so you can have a great day without leaving the port area. To head out and explore, exit through the main gate behind the shops.

Know before you go:

  • The currency is the U.S. dollar.

  • English is the official language.

  • Bring your ship card and a government photo ID to get back through the port gate.

My Pick: Jack's Shack

If you only do one thing in Grand Turk, walk to Jack's Shack. It's a laid-back beach bar about a 10 to 15 minute walk north along the beach from the cruise center, and it's a much better beach day than the crowded spots right next to the pier.

You'll find cold drinks, beach chairs and umbrellas for rent, and calm, clear water right in front. Bring cash or a card for chairs and drinks.

More Things to Do in Grand Turk

Beaches

  • Governor's Beach: a quieter, beautiful beach about a 20 to 25 minute walk north, or a short taxi ride

  • Pillory Beach: free public access with shore snorkeling near the old jetty

  • The cruise center beach: free loungers right by the ship

Snorkeling and water

  • Gibbs Cay: a small island known for swimming with wild stingrays

  • The Wall: an incredible underwater drop-off just offshore, popular for snorkeling and diving

History and sightseeing

  • Cockburn Town: the colorful capital, about a 10-minute ride away

  • Grand Turk Lighthouse: great views from the island's northern tip

  • John Glenn memorial: Grand Turk is where John Glenn's Friendship 7 capsule was recovered, and there's a replica at the cruise center

Book Your Excursions Through Virgin

For stingray trips, snorkeling, and island tours, book Shore Things through Virgin. Virgin plans them around the ship's schedule, and if a port is canceled, Shore Things booked through Virgin are refunded automatically. See the Shore Things guide.

Getting Around

  • Walking: easy to Jack's Shack and the nearby beaches

  • Taxis: wait outside the cruise center, with set fares to popular spots. Confirm your return fare before you go.

  • Golf carts and scooters: available to rent, but book ahead on busy days. They drive on the left here.

Tips for Your Grand Turk Day

  • Bring water and sunscreen. Shade is limited once you leave the port.

  • Wear reef-safe sunscreen to protect the coral.

  • Head out early to beat the crowds, especially on days with more than one ship in port.

  • Leave a buffer before all-aboard time.
