Walt Disney World Planning Guide: Tickets, Lightning Lane, Hotels, and When to Go

The short version: Walt Disney World has four theme parks (Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom) and two water parks. Plan on four to six days for the theme parks. The biggest decisions are when to go, where to stay, which tickets to buy, and whether to buy Lightning Lanes. Staying at a Disney Resort hotel gets you Early Theme Park Entry and earlier Lightning Lane booking.

Planning a Walt Disney World trip can feel like a part-time job. There are four theme parks, two water parks, dozens of hotels, ticket options, Lightning Lanes, and dining reservations to think about. The good news is that once you understand a few key decisions, everything else falls into place. Here's my step-by-step guide to planning Disney World, with what's new for 2026 and 2027.

Disney World at a Glance

  • Theme parks: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Disney's Animal Kingdom

  • Water parks: Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach

  • Ideal trip length: Four to six days for the four theme parks, with a rest day if you can

  • Biggest decisions: When to go, where to stay, which tickets to buy, and whether to buy Lightning Lanes

Step 1: Pick When to Go

Crowds, prices, and weather all change a lot by season.

  • Lighter crowds: Mid-January through mid-February (outside of holiday weekends and race weekends), late August through September, and early November before Thanksgiving week

  • Busiest: Spring break, summer, Thanksgiving week, and Christmas through New Year's

  • Weather: Summer is hot and humid with afternoon storms. Hurricane season runs June through November. Winter is mild, with the occasional chilly day.

  • Events: EPCOT runs festivals most of the year, and Magic Kingdom hosts separately ticketed Halloween and Christmas parties in the fall

Step 2: Decide Where to Stay

Staying at a Disney Resort hotel costs more than many off-site hotels, but the perks are real:

  • Early Theme Park Entry: Get into any theme park 30 minutes early, every day of your stay

  • Earlier Lightning Lane booking: Book up to 7 days before check-in for your whole stay, versus 3 days ahead for off-site guests

  • Extended Evening Hours: Deluxe Resort and Deluxe Villa guests get two extra hours at a select park on select nights

  • Transportation: Buses, plus the Monorail and Skyliner at some resorts

Disney's hotels come in Value, Moderate, and Deluxe tiers. Off-site hotels can save money, especially for bigger families, but you'll trade away those perks and spend more time getting to the parks.

Step 3: Choose Your Tickets

Disney World tickets are date-based, and the price changes by season and trip length. The more days you buy, the lower the price per day.

  • 1 Park Per Day: One theme park each day. Best for first-timers and families with young kids.

  • Park Hopper: Visit more than one theme park in the same day. Great if you want EPCOT dinners after a morning somewhere else.

  • Park Hopper Plus: Adds water park visits and a few other extras.

On a first trip, I usually recommend 1 Park Per Day. You'll fill each day easily, and you'll save money. Park Hopper starts to make sense on longer trips or repeat visits.

Step 4: Plan Your Lightning Lanes

Lightning Lanes are optional paid line-skipping passes. Every ride still has a free standby line, but at popular attractions Lightning Lanes can save you hours.

  • Lightning Lane Multi Pass: Book up to three return times in advance, then keep booking one at a time during your day

  • Lightning Lane Single Pass: Pay per ride for the few top headliners, like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, TRON Lightcycle / Run, and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

  • Lightning Lane Premier Pass: The priciest option, with one-time access to every Lightning Lane ride in one park and no return times to book

For how each one works and which is right for your family, see my Disney Lightning Lane Guide.

Step 5: Make Dining Reservations

Popular restaurants book up fast, especially character meals like Cinderella's Royal Table and Chef Mickey's. Advance Dining Reservations open 60 days before your trip, and Disney Resort hotel guests can book their whole stay at once. Set a reminder and book first thing that morning.

If you'd rather prepay meals, ask me about the Disney Dining Plan when we price your trip.

Step 6: Plan Your Park Days

  • Arrive early. Lines are shortest in the first hour. Use Early Theme Park Entry if you're staying on property.

  • Take a midday break. Head back to the hotel pool in the heat of the afternoon, then return for the evening.

  • Don't over-plan. Pick your two or three must-dos per park, and let the rest of the day happen.

  • Use the My Disney Experience app for wait times, Lightning Lanes, mobile food orders, and park maps.

What's New at Disney World in 2026 and 2027

  • Magic Kingdom: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin are back open after long refurbishments.

  • Hollywood Studios: Rock 'n' Roller Coaster now stars The Muppets.

  • EPCOT: Test Track has been reimagined, and Soarin' Across America is running for a limited time.

  • Animal Kingdom: Bluey's Wild World is open at Conservation Station. DINOSAUR has closed to make way for the new Tropical Americas area.

  • Coming in 2027: Tropical Americas at Animal Kingdom, including Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent and an Encanto attraction; the first phase of Monstropolis at Hollywood Studios; and Disney's Lakeshore Lodge, a new hotel near Magic Kingdom

Refurbishments come and go, so I check the closure calendar for your dates before we finalize your plans.

How Much Does a Disney World Trip Cost?

It depends on your dates, hotel, and ticket type, but plan for these main costs:

  • Park tickets for every person age 3 and up

  • Hotel

  • Lightning Lanes, if you buy them, per person per day

  • Food, whether you pay as you go or use a dining plan

  • Flights and transportation to Orlando

Disney releases discounts throughout the year, including room offers and ticket deals. Check my Deals page, or ask me and I'll watch for offers that fit your dates.

Add a Disney Cruise

Disney World pairs perfectly with a Disney cruise from Port Canaveral, about an hour from the parks. A few days at Disney World followed by a short Bahamas sailing makes a great once-in-a-lifetime family trip. Read about Disney's newest ship in my Disney Believe guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do you need at Disney World?

Four to six days covers all four theme parks at a comfortable pace. Add a day for a water park or a rest day.

Do you need park reservations at Disney World?

Most date-based tickets no longer need a separate park reservation. Some annual passes still do, so check your ticket type.

Is it worth staying at a Disney hotel?

For many families, yes. Early Theme Park Entry and the earlier Lightning Lane booking window can make a big difference on busy days.

When should I book a Disney World trip?

Six months to a year ahead is ideal, especially for holidays and school breaks. That gives you the best hotel choices and time to plan dining and Lightning Lanes.

Do I need Lightning Lanes?

Not always. On lighter crowd days, arriving early and using standby lines can work well. On busy days, Lightning Lane Multi Pass can save you hours.
